Quick answer: Frizz happens when strands take in moisture from the air unevenly, swell and stop lying smooth. Dry, roughed-up or wavy hair frizzes the most. Handle it gently, dry it smooth in the direction it sits, and finish with a tiny amount of product.

Everything on one card. Screenshot it for later.
Why it happens
- Humid air. Hair takes in moisture from the air. When some strands take in more than others, they swell, bend and stand apart from the rest. That's the fuzz you see.
- A roughed-up surface. The outer layer of each hair, the cuticle, normally lies flat. Heat, rubbing and bleaching can lift it, and a lifted cuticle lets moisture in more easily.
- Rough handling. Rubbing your hair with a towel, or brushing it once it's dry, breaks up its natural pattern and roughs up the surface.
- Natural wave. Wavy and curly hair frizzes more easily, especially when it's brushed or dried in every direction.
What helps
- Pat, don't rub. (Damp) Squeeze the water out with a towel instead of rubbing.
- Dry it smooth. (Damp to dry) Medium heat, with the airflow pointing down the hair from roots to ends, in the direction it sits.
- A tiny amount of Matte Clay. (Dry) Rub it between your palms until it's almost invisible, then smooth it lightly over the top.
Wavy hair? Skip the brush. Sea Salt Spray on damp hair, scrunch upward, then air-dry or diffuse and don't touch it while it dries.
Honest note: we're still testing how ROVANE handles frizz on different hair types. If frizz is your main problem, ask in the chair.
Common mistake
Brushing it once it's dry.
Fix: That breaks up the pattern and adds frizz. Comb while it's damp, then use your hands only.
