How to Add Volume to Flat Hair

How to Add Volume to Flat Hair

Quick answer: Volume comes from the blow-dry. Product helps it last. Spray Sea Salt Spray into damp roots, blow-dry while lifting the roots, then finish with Texture Powder if your hair is fine or Matte Clay if it's thick.

ROVANE Style Guide for flat hair: towel-dry, 4–6 sprays of Sea Salt Spray at the roots, blow-dry lifting the roots, then Texture Powder for fine hair or Matte Clay for thick hair.

Everything on one card. Screenshot it for later.

Why hair falls flat

Hair sets in the shape it dries in. If it dries lying against your head, it stays flat, and no product will fully fix that afterwards. Fine hair also gets weighed down quickly by too much product.

The routine

  1. Start with damp hair. (Damp) Towel-dry after washing so it's damp, not dripping.
  2. 4–6 sprays of Sea Salt Spray. (Damp) Mostly at the roots on top and at the crown.
  3. Blow-dry upward. (Damp to dry) Lift the roots with your fingers or a brush and point the dryer at the roots. Keep going until the roots are completely dry.
  4. Finish on dry hair. (Dry) Fine hair: 2–3 light shakes of Texture Powder at the roots, massage in and lift. Thick hair: a pea-sized amount of Matte Clay, warmed between your palms and worked through from back to front.

Need more hold? Use both: powder at the roots first, then a small amount of clay to finish.

Fine or thick?

Fine hair has thin strands, goes flat easily and gets weighed down fast: go with powder. Thick hair is coarse or dense and harder to control: go with clay. Not sure? Start with powder. It's the lighter of the two.

Common mistake

Drying it flat against your head.

Fix: Lift the roots while you dry and dry them completely. Product can't add volume that the blow-dry didn't create. On fine hair, also start with less product. You can always add more.
